New Marker Guidelines
Help us build a rich, meaningful map of our shared history. When adding a new marker, please follow these simple guidelines to ensure your contribution adds real value for everyone:
✅ What Makes a Good Marker
- Local Historical Significance: Your marker should represent something that has genuine local historical value - an event, person, place, or object that shaped the community or holds an important story.
- Known or Discoverable: Ideally, it’s something most locals know about - or something they should know about because it’s tied deeply to the area’s past.
- Verifiable: Add details that can be verified by others - a brief description, approximate date(s), and any known sources or references help keep our map accurate and trustworthy.
🚫 What to Avoid
- Avoid adding purely personal memories that aren’t tied to broader local history.
- Avoid duplicating an existing marker - check the map first!
- Avoid rumors or urban legends unless you clearly mark them as local lore and explain their context.
- Do not add markers that reveal active private residences.
✏️ How to Write It
- Be clear and concise. Include what happened, when, where, and why it matters.
- If possible, add a photo, link, or citation.
- Use respectful and accurate language - remember this is a record for the whole community.
📍 Examples
✅ Good markers:
- “Site of the old town hall, built in 1890 and destroyed by fire in 1947.”
- “Birthplace of [Notable Local Figure], who founded the first school in the region.”
- “Battlefield where the [Name] conflict took place in 1835.”
🚫 Not so good:
- “My favorite tree in my backyard.”
- “This alley looks spooky at night.”

## Marker Categories

| Fossil |  | Significant fossil discoveries such as first T-Rex skeleton |
| Historic Event |  | Marks sites where major historical events occurred, such as pivotal battles, landmark treaty signings, or groundbreaking scientific breakthroughs. |
| Historical Marker |  | Physical signs erected by state or local historical societies. |
| Indigenous History |  | Places significant to Indigenous peoples, such as ancestral homelands, sacred sites, traditional routes, or historic gatherings. |
| Local Lore |  | Places linked to regional legends, folk tales, and storied curiosities. |
| Military |  | Marks decommissioned or abandoned military sites-deserted bases, missile silos, test ranges, crash sites, and other battlefield remnants. |
| Natural Disaster |  | Sites shaped by significant natural disasters-volcanic eruption craters, tornado paths, earthquake-formed lakes, tsunami impact zones, and similar events. |
| Notable Figure |  | Marks places tied to notable figures from pioneering minds and cultural icons to famous animals. |
| Science |  | Sites of groundbreaking scientific research-particle accelerators, early reactors, observatories, laboratories, and similar facilities. |
| True Crime |  | Marks locations of notable true crime incidents-infamous murders, heists, kidnappings, and investigative milestones. |
Reporting a Problem with a Marker
We want the map to stay accurate, respectful, and safe for everyone. If you spot an issue with any marker, you can report it directly through the app.

Reasons to Report a Marker
You can report a marker for any of these reasons:
- Offensive Word - The title or description contains slurs, insults, or inappropriate language.
- Offensive Image - The photo includes graphic, violent, or disrespectful content.
- Mature Content - The marker’s text or image includes adult content that’s not appropriate for all audiences.
- Marker Uncollectable - The marker can’t be safely visited or claimed - for example, it’s on private property with no public access.
- False Information - The marker’s description is inaccurate, misleading, or not historically significant.
- Other - Anything else that doesn’t fit above but still violates our community standards.

How to Report
- Open the marker you want to report.
- Tap Report Marker (look for the flag icon).
- Choose the reason that best fits.
- Add any extra details (optional but helpful!).
- Submit - our moderation team will review it as soon as possible.

What Happens Next
- Our team checks each report carefully.
- If a marker breaks our rules, we’ll edit or remove it.
- If needed, we may reach out to the marker’s creator for clarification.
- Serious or repeat violations may lead to account action.
